I just opened up an eBay shop and figuring out the shipping is a nightmare. After researching the prices of items, I am convinced that the Amazon FBA is the way to go for me. Just as Amazon is known to most American consumers as an e-commerce titan, China’s e-commerce market is dominated by Alibaba. Though the company operates through a unique combination of business models, Alibaba’s core business resembles that of eBay. Alibaba acts as a middleman between buyers and sellers online and facilitates the sale of goods between the two parties through its extensive network of websites. The largest site, Taobao, operates as a fee-free marketplace where neither sellers nor buyers are assessed a fee for completing transactions. Rather, the nearly 7 million active sellers on Taobao pay to rank higher on the site’s internal search engine, generating advertising revenue for Alibaba that resembles Google’s core business model.
I can’t tell you exactly at what point the government should step in to block Amazon from buying another company or curtail some of its business practices. I am, however, fairly confident in saying that it ought to be well before Amazon achieves a 40 percent market share in books, groceries, clothing, hardware, electronics and home furnishings. And it ought to be before Amazon pulls even with UPS in shipping, Oracle in computing and Comcast in media content. while Individual and Professional Sellers pay the same referral fees on product sales, Individual sellers are charged a $0.99/per item fee for each unit that sells. Professional sellers don’t have this fee. While an Individual Seller pays no monthly fee for your seller account, you will pay a per-item $0.99 fee on each sale in additional to the usual Amazon referral fees. Given that the Professional Seller monthly fee is $39.99, if you plan to sell more than 40 units a month, you may want to consider getting a Professional Seller account just for the purpose of saving on the per-item fee (plus there are many other advantages being a Professional Seller). Create a stylish and functional website. Elegant or funky, classical or hipster, your online store should reflect what you’re selling. No matter what your style is, it’s important to give off a professional air. Since you won’t be able to earn people’s trust in person, your website will have to do the selling for you. Your site should be engaging, and most importantly, easy for customers to use when they’re ready to make a purchase.

When I first started selling on Amazon 9 years ago, this was the only option available to us. This meant I had to package and ship out individual orders on my own, or with helpers as my business started to grow.
6. Focus: Perhaps most important of all, you have to learn to focus on the right things to get the right results. This is a business. This is YOUR business. You’re not here to play around. Click “Start Selling.” This will take you to a new page where you can choose which type of seller you are. Click this option under “Individual Sellers” or “Professional Sellers,” depending on the type of seller you’d like to become. Individual Sellers tend to be free from selling fees (with the exception of commission Amazon takes from each order) while the Professional Sellers are fee-based and tend to mostly be used by those who own (rather profitable) offline stores otherwise.

The best way to combat this is to register your brand. A lot of new sellers skip this step in the beginning because it requires a website and a trademark but if your product ends up taking off, you need to take care of this ASAP.

I work for an American-owned but China based importing company that specifically helps online sellers, and I’m afraid sellers do share some of the blame. Many online sellers are failing to do their product sourcing properly because they’re using outdated guides that worked a few years back but still appear everywhere on the internet. First, they seek out the cheapest manufacturer possibe on Alibaba because they’re testing their business. This leads to them being connected with middlemen and scammers. The deluge of sellers asking for the lowest possible MOQ means the best suppliers just ignore them and move on. And all too often, sellers fail to do a quality control inspection on their goods prior to shipping them to FBA because they just care about sales. As a result, Amazon has started to get very stringent with product quality issues. It really is the sellers responsibility to ensure their goods come from a reputable supplier. No, Alibaba star ratings are not a good indicator because they can be purchased when a supplier joins the site. Sellers should also be testing their goods with a quality control inspection prior to sending to FBA, especially if they’re customized for private label. These are inexpensive (about $200 to have someone go to the factory and check your goods). Defects are common in manufacturing, and smart sellers make sure their order includes recompensatoin for defective units prior to them being shipped to Amazon. Walmart would never put items on the shelf without a qc check and online sellers should follow theri lead. You’re exactly correct that this problem has come from too many folks jumping on the bandwagon without fulling understaing how to import safely. And we agree, the Amazon wave will only last so long. Amazon sees sellers as middle-men driving up the price to line their own pockets, so they are now training Chinese manufactureres to list their products on Amazon themselves. It is those same suppliers who are now undercutting the sellers on Amazon, and frankly, wouldn’t you if you were them? Steve is entirely right that the best strategy is multi-channel selling and that’s why we’re huge fans of this blog!

Of course, achieving customer loyalty and repeat purchases has been key to Amazon’s success. Many dot-coms failed because they succeeded in achieving awareness, but not loyalty. Amazon achieved both. In their SEC filing they stress how they seek to achieve this. They say:

India is another example of how we globalize an offering like Marketplace through customer obsession and a passion for invention. Last year we ran a program called Amazon Chai Cart where we deployed three-wheeled mobile carts to navigate in a city’s business districts, serve tea, water and lemon juice to small business owners and teach them about selling online. In a period of four months, the team traveled 15,280 km across 31 cities, served 37,200 cups of tea and engaged with over 10,000 sellers. Through this program and other conversations with sellers, we found out there was a lot of interest in selling online, but that sellers struggled with the belief that the process was time-consuming, tedious and complex. So, we invented Amazon Tatkal, which enables small businesses to get online in less than 60 minutes. Amazon Tatkal is a specially designed studio-on-wheels offering a suite of launch services including registration, imaging and cataloguing services, as well as basic seller training mechanisms. Pricing is also one of the main reasons businesses choose to sign up for an account with Amazon Business. Many of the prices you’ll see on the product pages are exclusive to account holders. And some manufacturers even offer their products exclusively to business users on the platform. You can also get free two-day shipping on eligible items of $49 or more.
So I don’t look at Mike any differently than I would if Amazon were selling the item. And the truth is, most people don’t even notice that it doesn’t say “Sold by Amazon.com.” They just see Fulfilled by Amazon and that they can get Two-Day Shipping on the order.
Is there a minimum number of pieces of a single item that need to be sent to the Amazon warehouse to be an Amazon FBA seller. For example,if I have only 1 or 2 of an item, is that small a quantity acceptable?
KHAN: So under the current interpretation of antitrust laws, Amazon seems to be getting a free pass. So I should say that antitrust laws in, their current state, don’t prohibit conglomeration. They don’t prohibit a single company from being involved in all these different lines of business. But what they are supposed to prevent is a company that enjoys a dominant footprint in one area of the market, using that footprint to leverage its way into other markets, and so I think that’s the area where Amazon potentially should be facing scrutiny.
This is a very popular option for many Amazon sellers. Private label sellers purchase products from manufacturers but package and market them under their own brand. This has many advantages, the main one being you actually build a name for yourself by selling a branded item that “belongs” to you. You can private label a huge assortment of goods, including cosmetics and skincare products.
I am very familiar with the Amazon FBA as I worked at a company where they sold all their products on Amazon through FBA. We would even go to garage sales and find tons of items that sold on Amazon for large profits. I created my own Amazon seller account years ago and didn’t know what I was doing so I posted items that weren’t the actual items I owned and Amazon suspended my account, this was about 5 years ago. After working at this company and becoming good at finding products that would sell on Amazon for profit I went to open a new seller account to start making my own business selling through Amazon and ran into trouble as they are very strict about not being able to open a second account under the same name and since my first account from years past was suspended I have been trying every different way to be able to sell on Amazon again. I am so frustrated that I am not able to sell the products I have on Amazon because of my first attempt at selling something on Amazon in years past. Is there any sites that offer to sell items for you as a 3rd party type business. Or is there any way I could purchase an existing sellers account from someone? What do you suggest I do about this? I have tons of experience selling on Amazon at a past employment and feel like I could be very successful if able to open an Amazon Sellers Account somehow. Please help if possible. Thank you.
