We were really impressed by the ExactTarget demo at Dreamforce (the company was recently acquired by salesforce.com). One thing that stood out to us about ExactTarget is the system’s ability to target communications over multiple channels. Most marketing automation tools focus on email, ExactTarget goes beyond that and lets you target mobile app notifications, or even messages to the dashboard of a customer’s car (if, for example, you were a car manufacturer).

In a nutshell, marketing automation is any technology that can help you scale an increasing number of marketing channels. It is typically made up of three primary components. First is a central marketing database. This is where all your marketing data – your prospects, your customer behaviors and any other pertinent data resides.
It’s basically the process of tweaking your websites so that it ranks on search engines like Google, Bing or Yahoo. It’s actually a very powerful technique. If you rank number one for a certain keyword, it is possible to earn hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, for that keyword alone.
The consequence is that marketers begin buying lists of email addresses to nurture instead of generating inbound leads. While it seems like a quick fix, it’s not a long-term solution, nor does it create the fertile ground for a healthier, longer relationship with your future customers. In our plant analogy, it’s sort of like using artificial chemicals or enhancers to make your plant grow faster. Sure, it seems like a good, quick fix–but it doesn’t set you up for future, long-term success.

Now if there isn’t anything out there like this….its a huge miss!! Maintaining a company’s website press coverage is a time consuming, mindless job really….all you are doing is taking an abstract from an article someone else wrote about your organization (Newspapers/magazines/television/blogs etc), and creating a link for the reader to read the original article. But however time consuming the job is, it is important to keep the information current, relative, and timely for a lot of reasons and for a nonprofit could mean the difference between getting further press coverage or not.

A fourth question may be added to the list, namely ‘How do we know when we got there?’ Due to increasing need for accountability, many marketing organisations use a variety of marketing metrics to track strategic performance, allowing for corrective action to be taken as required. On the surface, strategic planning seeks to address three simple questions, however, the research and analysis involved in strategic planning is very sophisticated and requires a great deal of skill and judgement.
Drip campaigns are easy to set up, but managing them effectively is key. For a start, see if your email platform supports triggered automatic sending – timing and a consistent experience for all your contacts will be key. It’s also important to measure engagement with your campaign and to know when a contact is engaged enough to approach directly. If Lead scoring is a feature you can use to measure and automate this is the perfect time to do so. Long campaigns will also benefit from a preference centre – an alternative to a simple unsubscribe, which offers multiple options to keep your audience involved and allow further segmentation.
