The conundrum fascinated Tramunti. He’d struggled with dyslexia in school, and like many with it, he’d developed an ability to memorize huge chunks of facts and figures to compensate–as he puts it, “we find workarounds.” He began studying all their products, memorizing competitors’ prices, watching as new items climbed the rankings. He toyed with different pricing strategies, figuring out formulas for how much they could charge for certain products and still get the sale. They started getting the buy box–and making money–more often.
Manually adding your product to an existing listing is easy in your Seller Central Dashboard. Simply search for the item under List a new product using the product name, Amazon product ID, or item SKU:
Selling in gated categories (or what Amazon calls “Categories and Products Requiring Approval”): As we mentioned earlier, some ten plus categories on Amazon are gated, meaning you need to get special permission to list/sell items in those categories. If you have products in those categories to sell, you should start the un-gating request process immediately after getting registered, so you can take advantage of the “first 30-days free” program that is typically available on all new Professional Seller accounts. So if your request to sell in a gated category is turned down, you should still have enough time to decide whether to cancel your Professional Seller account before you are charged a monthly fee after the first 30 days has passed. If the majority of the products you plan to sell are in gated categories you don’t get permission to access, it may not make a lot of sense to continue efforts to be an Amazon seller.
Be social. Whatever your business, whatever your venue, keeping your name in the air is key to internet success. Have a business account on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. If your business is graphically oriented, have accounts on Flickr and Tumblr as well. Whenever there is news of any kind—a new contract, a new page, a new entry, a new photo—cross-post it to all your social media sites. Also make sure those sites link back to your main website, and that your website has links to all of them.

I work for an American-owned but China based importing company that specifically helps online sellers, and I’m afraid sellers do share some of the blame. Many online sellers are failing to do their product sourcing properly because they’re using outdated guides that worked a few years back but still appear everywhere on the internet. First, they seek out the cheapest manufacturer possibe on Alibaba because they’re testing their business. This leads to them being connected with middlemen and scammers. The deluge of sellers asking for the lowest possible MOQ means the best suppliers just ignore them and move on. And all too often, sellers fail to do a quality control inspection on their goods prior to shipping them to FBA because they just care about sales. As a result, Amazon has started to get very stringent with product quality issues. It really is the sellers responsibility to ensure their goods come from a reputable supplier. No, Alibaba star ratings are not a good indicator because they can be purchased when a supplier joins the site. Sellers should also be testing their goods with a quality control inspection prior to sending to FBA, especially if they’re customized for private label. These are inexpensive (about $200 to have someone go to the factory and check your goods). Defects are common in manufacturing, and smart sellers make sure their order includes recompensatoin for defective units prior to them being shipped to Amazon. Walmart would never put items on the shelf without a qc check and online sellers should follow theri lead. You’re exactly correct that this problem has come from too many folks jumping on the bandwagon without fulling understaing how to import safely. And we agree, the Amazon wave will only last so long. Amazon sees sellers as middle-men driving up the price to line their own pockets, so they are now training Chinese manufactureres to list their products on Amazon themselves. It is those same suppliers who are now undercutting the sellers on Amazon, and frankly, wouldn’t you if you were them? Steve is entirely right that the best strategy is multi-channel selling and that’s why we’re huge fans of this blog!
It is interesting that Amazon was having this debate in about the elements of RFM analysis (described in Chapter 6 of Internet Marketing), 1997, after already having achieved $16 million of revenue in the previous year.     Many people have this thought. The main thing is that every day more and more people sign up to be PRIME buyers on Amazon and the marketshare of online shopping goes up every year. People love the convenience. So, it is not saturated in my opinion.

    Can you sell PLR (private label resell products) this way as well? Also, since I’m not able to get out and look for product at stores, etc. can I buy from wholesalers and then add what my price would. Send these to the fulfillment center for Amazon to pack up and ship?
    And then you put your label, your design, your packaging on that product and then send that to Amazon and Amazon essentially will do almost everything else for you. Amazon will handle the fulfilment for you–they’ll store your inventory in their warehouses.

  2. Many of Amazon’s investment ventures are designed to improve sales totals and increase global expansion. Amazon runs a profitable organization, but all the profits are being invested in efforts to make the organization a more powerful global enterprise. This may explain why Amazon’s stock continues to rise, despite reductions in profit on quarterly reports. Amazon may be unprofitable with a few key items, but remains profitable for retail operations overall.
    Chances are, you’ve shopped on Amazon at some point. You may even have made purchases specifically for business items. But if you’re shopping for business items on Amazon and you’re not using the Amazon Business platform, you may be missing out.

  3. So, let’s see: selling directly to Amazon puts you on the right side of the future, is easier and leads to more sales. Keep in mind; this doesn’t mean it is right for everyone, but it certainly is an option.
    When I first started selling on Amazon 9 years ago, this was the only option available to us. This meant I had to package and ship out individual orders on my own, or with helpers as my business started to grow.
    In the platform business, they learned, price is everything. Set a price too high, and Amazon buries it. Setting it too low is worse, earning the buy box and leading to thousands of orders flooding in–and a loss of money on every sale.
    I have input a few items that I purchased just to do a trial run with the Amazon FBA selling strategy. But unless I am doing something terribly wrong, I am not going to be making much if anything on each item. My excitement is waning…

    You can modify this later, but it only allows you to change it by a few units less or more. Amazon want you to confirm that you’re aware of any storage fees. Now for some products, you might have to give more information, if it’s in a restricted category or something like that, but for the most part you shouldn’t need to take any further action.
