There are over 76 million customer accounts, but just 1.3 million active seller customers in it’s marketplaces and Amazon is seeking to increase this. Amazon is unusual for a retailer in that it identifies “developer customers” who use its Amazon Web Services, which provides access to technology infrastructure such as hosting that developers can use to develop their own web services.
Analysts sometimes refer to ‘Amazoning a sector’ meaning that one company becomes dominant in an online sector such as book retail such that it becomes very difficult for others to achieve market share. In addition to developing, communicating and delivering a very strong proposition, Amazon has been able to consolidate its strength in different sectors through its partnership arrangements and through using technology to facilitate product promotion and distribution via these partnerships. The Amazon retail platform enables other retailers to sell products online using the Amazon user interface and infrastructure through their ‘Syndicated Stores’ programme.

This is called Merchant Fulfilling. I am going to keep this post all about selling on Amazon using FBA so I won’t get all into MF other than to say that, with merchant fulfilling, you handle all of the steps above…AND, you don’t benefit from the next big point.

The automated search advertising and bidding system for paid search has had a big impact at Amazon. Sponsored links initially done by humans, but this was unsustainable due to range of products at Amazon. The automated programme generates keywords, writes ad creative, determines best landing page, manages bids, measure conversion rates, profit per converted visitor and updates bids. Again the problem of volume is there, Matt Round described how the book ‘How to Make Love Like a Porn Star’ by Jenna Jameson received tens of thousands of clicks from pornography-related searches, but few actually purchased the book. So the update cycle must be quick to avoid large losses.

Of course, achieving customer loyalty and repeat purchases has been key to Amazon’s success. Many dot-coms failed because they succeeded in achieving awareness, but not loyalty. Amazon achieved both. In their SEC filing they stress how they seek to achieve this. They say:

Since then we’ve gone through all of those resources ourselves and have selected 10 products – one product from each resource category that looked interesting and caught our eye. As a very quick product demand test we cross checked all of them in Google Trends. All of the 10 product ideas we selected have a strong upwards trend.
If you’re selling new items, you can use stickerless, commingled inventory. This means that Amazon will commingle your inventory with other sellers’ matching units. If someone orders from you, Amazon might ship a matching unit that is actually from a different seller, but in warehouse closer to the customer. This allows Amazon to ship items faster for better customer service.
Although a longtime law professor at Yale, Bork was a charter member of the “Chicago school” of law and economics, which argued that judges should use rigorous analysis of economic consequences in deciding antitrust cases. Previously, much of antitrust doctrine was based on somewhat vague political notions that big was bad — that large corporations with large market shares inevitably used their power to drive rivals from the market, raise prices, buy favorable treatment from legislators and regulators. In 1963, the Supreme Court even went so far as to declare that any merger that achieved more than 30 percent share of any market should be considered unlawful.
Economists, meanwhile, complain that antitrust analysis has failed to fully incorporate the insights of modern game theory, information theory and behavioral economics that go a long way to explaining why consumers, companies and markets don’t behave the way Chicago school theory says they should.
Many companies describe themselves as customer-focused, but few walk the walk. Most big technology companies are competitor focused. They see what others are doing, and then work to fast follow. In contrast, 90 to 95% of what we build in AWS is driven by what customers tell us they want. A good example is our new database engine, Amazon Aurora. Customers have been frustrated by the proprietary nature, high cost, and licensing terms of traditional, commercial-grade database providers. And while many companies have started moving toward more open engines like MySQL and Postgres, they often struggle to get the performance they need. It has commercial-grade durability and availability, is fully compatible with MySQL, has up to 5 times better performance than the typical MySQL implementation, but is 1/10th the price of the traditional, commercial-grade database engines. This has struck a resonant chord with customers, and Aurora is the fastest-growing service in the history of AWS. Nearly this same story could be told about Redshift, our managed data warehouse service, which is the second fastest growing service in AWS history — both small and large companies are moving their data warehouses to Redshift.

Amazon, though, offers no pretense that catering to employees is a priority. Compensation is considered competitive — successful midlevel managers can collect the equivalent of an extra salary from grants of a stock that has increased more than tenfold since 2008. But workers are expected to embrace “frugality” (No. 9), from the bare-bones desks to the cellphones and travel expenses that they often pay themselves. (No daily free food buffets or regular snack supplies, either.) The focus is on relentless striving to please customers, or “customer obsession” (No. 1), with words like “mission” used to describe lightning-quick delivery of Cocoa Krispies or selfie sticks.
Thanks so much for writing this article! Much of what is being said about Amazon is 100% accurate. I work for an American-owned but China based importing company that specifically helps online sellers, and I’m afraid sellers do share some of the blame. Many online sellers are failing to do their product sourcing properly because they’re using outdated guides that worked a few years back but still appear everywhere on the internet. First, they seek out the cheapest manufacturer possibe on Alibaba because they’re testing their business. This leads to them being connected with middlemen and scammers. The deluge of sellers asking for the lowest possible MOQ means the best suppliers just ignore them and move on. And all too often, sellers fail to do a quality control inspection on their goods prior to shipping them to FBA because they just care about sales. As a result, Amazon has started to get very stringent with product quality issues. It really is the sellers responsibility to ensure their goods come from a reputable supplier. No, Alibaba star ratings are not a good indicator because they can be purchased when a supplier joins the site. Sellers should also be testing their goods with a quality control inspection prior to sending to FBA, especially if they’re customized for private label. These are inexpensive (about $200 to have someone go to the factory and check your goods). Defects are common in manufacturing, and smart sellers make sure their order includes recompensatoin for defective units prior to them being shipped to Amazon. Walmart would never put items on the shelf without a qc check and online sellers should follow theri lead. You’re exactly correct that this problem has come from too many folks jumping on the bandwagon without fulling understaing how to import safely. And we agree, the Amazon wave will only last so long. Amazon sees sellers as middle-men driving up the price to line their own pockets, so they are now training Chinese manufactureres to list their products on Amazon themselves. It is those same suppliers who are now undercutting the sellers on Amazon, and frankly, wouldn’t you if you were them? Steve is entirely right that the best strategy is multi-channel selling and that’s why we’re huge fans of this blog!

Quality King is now a supplier, although Vagenas and Webb stress it is only one of Pharmapacks’ four major distributors and not its largest–it buys more from suppliers Kinray and H.D. Smith, for example.
Information products. Here, you promote products like ebooks, membership sites, video series, etc. This type of affiliate marketing can earn you up to 50% or more in commission, has relatively low barriers to entry, and it’s easy to find products to promote.

Please note: Once converted, your listings will be temporarily removed from Amazon.com until the inventory has been received at Amazon’s fulfillment center. So, you must finish the entire process to list and sell your items through Amazon FBA.
